Creation Care

The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.

- Genesis 2:15

Green Chalice

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As we move toward wholeness, we strive to develop sustainable and just practices so that all might share in the abundance of God's creation. This holistic cultivation of our faith calls us to seek justice through consumer and lifestyle choices. As humankind has been called to till and to keep the garden, we strive to live in harmony and peace with all creation. As the Creation Care Ministry we are inviting, educating, and empowering individuals and faith

communities to engage in and advocate for loving stewardship of God's creation.

 How to Become a Green Chalice Congregation:

 Become a Green Chalice congregation by:

  1. Forming a Green Team at your church.
  2. Signing the Alverana Covenant as a team or as a church.
  3. Making at least 3 changes that demonstrate the commitment your congregation has for caring for God's creation.
  4. Have a representative from your Green Team e-mail the following information to cdevine@dhm.org. Your church name and contact information, the date you signed the Alverna Covenant and the changes made by your church in caring for God's creation.

The Alverna Covenant Whereas:

God has created the world with finite resources; God has given to us the stewardship of the earth; God has established order through many natural cycles.

And it is evident that:

We are consuming resources at a rate that cannot be maintained; We are interrupting many natural cycles; We are irresponsibly modifying the environment through consumption and pollution; We are populating the earth at a rate that cannot be maintained;

As a member of the human family and a follower of Jesus Christ, I hereby covenant that:

I will change my lifestyle to reduce my contribution to pollution; I will support recycling efforts; I will search for sustainable lifestyles; I will work for public policies which lead to a just and sustainable society; I will share these concerns with others and urge them to make this Covenant.
